4MATIC vs. 4MATIC +: either one’s a win

The Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel drive system is one of the most efficient on the market. And one of the most sophisticated, too, because it is available in six different ways to serve vehicles that have different designs but also distinct vocations.

Basically, across the range, we're taking advantage of the more regular 4MATIC system, which takes different approaches. However, with the performance-oriented AMG versions, the company has recently introduced a 4MATIC + version that offers... more to consumers. Let's see how both looks.

4MATIC

With the regular system, no matter what vehicle you drive, you're assured of maximum traction at all times. With some front-wheel-drive vehicles, the system is described as variable, where it can shift 50% of the torque to the rear to compensate for the lack of traction in the front.

However, the vast majority of the brand's models benefit from a permanent system that, as the name suggests, always maintains traction in front and rear (50/50 ratio). And when it spins on either side, power is distributed intelligently to maximize grip.

On some new products, such as the GLE and GLS SUVs, a fully variable system is able to send 100% of the torque to either the front or the rear. It's impossible to get stuck.

4MATIC +

With AMG models, the 4MATIC system is always aimed at offering maximum grip, but its parameters are combined with those of the sporty driving experience offered by these creations for an even more engaged experience behind the wheel.

For example, in the regular configuration, it's not a 50/50 ratio that's offered, but rather a 31/69 (front-to-rear) ratio to give priority to the rear wheels.

And with the 4MATIC + versions, an extra level of flexibility is added, as 100% of the torque can be sent to the rear, but also distributed perfectly to provide extreme grip. On the E-Class variant, it's even possible to separate the transmission from the front wheels, so you can enjoy a rear-wheel drive car whenever you feel like it.

The 4MATIC approach, and more specifically the 4MATIC + approach for AMG models, is all about perfect traction.
