A First Look at the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Alberta's New Electric Flagship

Mercedes-Benz built its reputation on the S-Class - the sedan that defined what a flagship could be. The 2027 EQS picks up that thread in electric form, bringing 925 km of WLTP-rated range, 800-volt charging architecture, and a supercomputer-driven operating system to Alberta's highways. If you've been waiting for an electric luxury sedan that doesn't compromise on distance or refinement, this is it.

The EQS has been a technology pioneer since its introduction - the first Mercedes-Benz with the MBUX Hyperscreen, the first to achieve a 0.20 drag coefficient, and now the first German series production car with steer-by-wire technology. For 2027, more than a quarter of all vehicle components are newly developed or refined. This is not a carryover year.

Key Specs and Features

At the core of the 2027 EQS is a next-generation electric architecture: 800-volt technology, in-house electric drive units, a two-speed rear transmission, and a larger 122 kWh battery with optimized cell chemistry. The result is a sedan that travels further, charges faster, and delivers more power.

The EQS 450+ sets a new benchmark with 925 km WLTP-rated range - enough to cover Calgary to Edmonton and back with range to spare. The 800-volt architecture enables DC fast charging up to 350 kW, adding 320 km of range in 10 minutes. At 400-volt stations, an intelligent control system virtually divides the battery in half, charging each at up to 175 kW.

The EQS 500 4MATIC and EQS 580 4MATIC add all-wheel drive with a front electric drive unit that activates as needed. Both feature the same 122 kWh battery and 350 kW DC fast charging. The two-speed rear transmission pairs dynamics with efficiency: first gear for rapid acceleration, second gear for highway power delivery and maximum range. The electronically limited 209 km/h top speed is reached in second gear.

Recuperation power has increased by a third to 385 kW, returning more energy during braking. In everyday driving, braking can be achieved almost entirely through recuperation alone, adjustable via steering wheel paddles or the gear selector.

The EQS features AIRMATIC air suspension with cloud-based damper regulation that automatically adjusts before reaching speed bumps. Standard rear-axle steering enhances stability at higher speeds by steering rear wheels parallel to the front.

What Sets It Apart

The 2027 EQS introduces the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), transforming the sedan into an intelligent companion that understands, thinks ahead, and evolves. This supercomputer uses artificial intelligence, powerful chips, and connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, enabling over-the-air updates of the entire vehicle software without dealership visits.

The new MBUX infotainment integrates AI with a Virtual Assistant that conducts complex dialogues and various avatars for personal interaction. The standard MBUX Hyperscreen merges three digital displays beneath a single 55-inch glass surface.

Mercedes-Benz is the first German automaker to offer steer-by-wire technology on a series production car. This optional system transforms driver interaction with completely new steering feel, reduced effort, and no need to adjust grip when turning. Vibrations from uneven roads are eliminated while precise steering feel is maintained. A flatter steering wheel improves space, display visibility, and entry/exit. The steering ratio adapts to driving situations, with rear wheels steering parallel at higher speeds for stability. Redundant system architecture, high-precision sensors, and powerful control units ensure safety.

The EQS is equipped with 10 external cameras, up to five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors working with a high-performance control unit running MB.OS. AI algorithms trained on fleet data process sensor information to understand traffic conditions. MB.DRIVE advanced driver assistance technologies are standard, including collision warning, automatic braking, and lane-keeping. MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST with 360-degree camera offers improved surround view and rim protection warning.

The new DIGITAL LIGHT with Ultra Wide high beam creates a larger, high-resolution field of illumination and is 50% more efficient. It introduces partial high beam function to North America for the first time. A HEPA filter cleans incoming air, filtering 99.65% of particles.

With a 0.20 drag coefficient and 2.51 m² frontal area, the EQS achieves an effective resistance area of 0.5 m² - less than a road cyclist experiences.

The new illuminated Mercedes-Benz standing star, striking hood powerdomes, and star design daytime running lights characterize the front end. Optional packages enhance the exterior with a dynamic illuminated radiator grille with backlit star pattern.

Advanced seatbelt heating for front seats provides warmth in cold weather. The optional MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment system features two 13-inch displays with intelligent functions. New MBUX remotes give rear passengers control over comfort functions and entertainment.

New black wood trim with fine-line structure adds an expressive touch. Iconic laurel decorative stitching in door panels, offered in Macchiato Beige/Space Grey, picks up the laurel motif of the Mercedes-Benz emblem. The MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure program offers extensive personalization with over 100 paint colours, illuminated door sills, steering wheel variants, and emblem packages.

Pre-Order the 2027 EQS

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS is built for buyers who expect their luxury sedan to deliver on every front: range, technology, refinement, and driving dynamics. The 925 km WLTP-rated range on the EQS 450+ eliminates the compromise that has defined electric luxury sedans. The 800-volt architecture and 350 kW DC fast charging mean less waiting and more driving. The introduction of MB.OS and steer-by-wire technology signals that Mercedes-Benz is defining what the next generation of luxury sedans should be.
