Everything You Need to Know About the Capability of the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE in Alberta

If you drive Alberta's backcountry roads - from the Kananaskis trails to the gravel stretches north of Grande Prairie - you know that capability means more than just four-wheel drive. The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE arrives with technology designed to handle terrain you can't always see coming.

The transparent hood function displays a virtual view under the front of the vehicle during off-road driving, letting you spot obstacles before they become problems. Optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL regulates each wheel individually, adapting to surface changes 1,000 times per second.

The GLE lineup spans five trims - GLE 350 4MATIC, GLE 450 4MATIC, GLE 500e 4MATIC, GLE 580 4MATIC, and AMG GLE 53 HYBRID - each with 4MATIC all-wheel drive standard.

Two plug-in hybrid variants (GLE 500e and AMG GLE 53 HYBRID) combine electric efficiency with the torque and range of a turbocharged engine. The standard MBUX Superscreen integrates three 12.3-inch displays across the dashboard, while the MB.OS supercomputer enables over-the-air updates to keep the vehicle current without a dealership visit.

How the GLE Handles Alberta's Terrain

The transparent hood function is the standout feature for off-road driving. When you activate Off-Road Mode in MBUX, the centre display shows a composite view from the 360-degree camera system, creating a virtual window through the hood.

You see rocks, ruts, and steep ramps directly in your path - the kind of obstacles that are invisible from the driver's seat on a steep approach.

The AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent damping control adjusts automatically before the vehicle encounters a bump. The system uses cloud-based data to anticipate road conditions ahead and adapts damping in real time. The GLE can also be raised to increase ground clearance or lowered for easier entry.

Optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, available on the GLE 580 4MATIC, takes this further. Five multi-core processors and more than 20 sensors analyze the driving situation 1,000 times per second. The system controls spring and damper forces individually at each wheel, counteracting roll, pitch, and lift movements.

Two specialized functions support off-road recovery: Free-wheel mode rocks the vehicle by raising and lowering the suspension to improve traction in sand or mud, and Individual Wheel Control lets you adjust the suspension level at each corner via MBUX to align the vehicle on rough ground.

Drive modes include Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Trail, and Individual. If you're driving the GLE 500e or AMG GLE 53 HYBRID, you also get Electric mode for all-electric driving and Battery Hold mode to preserve charge for later use.

Powertrain Options and What They Deliver

The GLE 350 4MATIC uses a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The GLE 450 4MATIC steps up to a 3.0L inline-six with 375 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. The inline-six reaches 96.6 km/h in 5.0 seconds. The engine includes an electric auxiliary compressor that eliminates turbo lag, so throttle response is immediate even at low rpm.

The GLE 500e 4MATIC is the first plug-in hybrid in the lineup. It pairs a 3.0L inline-six (322 hp, 395 lb-ft) with a 181-hp electric motor for a combined system output of 429 hp and 502 lb-ft.

The plug-in hybrid offers 106 km of all-electric range (WLTP), which covers most daily driving in Calgary or Edmonton without burning fuel. A 9.6-kW onboard charger handles AC charging at home or at public stations.

The GLE 580 4MATIC uses a 4.0L V8 producing 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. This is the most powerful non-AMG variant, reaching 96.6 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The GLE 580 is the only trim that offers E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL as an option.

The AMG GLE 53 HYBRID sits at the top of the lineup. It combines a 3.0L inline-six (443 hp, 443 lb-ft) with a 181-hp electric motor for a combined system output of 577 hp and 553 lb-ft. All-electric driving is possible at speeds up to 140 km/h.

All trims use a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

All-electric driving is possible at speeds up to 140 km/h (140 km/h).

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 4.2 seconds, and top speed is electronically limited to 249 km/h (249 km/h).

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 5.7 seconds.

The 400-volt architecture supports DC fast charging at 60 kW, which charges the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 20 minutes.

Technology That Adapts to How You Drive

The MB.OS supercomputer integrates artificial intelligence and connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. Over-the-air updates keep the vehicle current without a dealership visit, adding new features and refining existing ones as Mercedes-Benz develops them.

The MBUX Superscreen is standard across the lineup. Three 12.3-inch displays sit under a single glass surface that spans the dashboard. The MBUX Virtual Assistant responds to natural language commands. MBUX Navigation integrates Google Maps technology with the Mercedes-Benz interface, so you get real-time traffic data and familiar search functionality.

MB.DRIVE advanced driver assistance technologies include Distance Assist DISTRONIC, which maintains a set following distance and can bring the vehicle to a complete stop in traffic. MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360 handles parallel and perpendicular parking, and the 360-degree camera system provides a bird's-eye view of the vehicle's surroundings.

Interior Space and Cargo Flexibility

The GLE offers seating for five as standard, with an available third row for buyers who need occasional seating for seven. The second row can be adjusted fore and aft by up to 99 mm and the backrests recline by 18 degrees. Power adjustable second-row seats are optional and include a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration.

If you opt for the power adjustable rear seats, cargo space increases to 821 litres behind the second row.

The GLE Is Built for Drivers Who Go Beyond Pavement

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE combines luxury with the kind of capability that matters when you're driving Alberta's backcountry. The transparent hood function gives you visibility where you need it most, and E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL adapts to terrain in real time.

Five powertrain options - including two plug-in hybrids - let you choose the balance of power, efficiency, and electric range that fits your driving. The MB.OS supercomputer keeps the vehicle current with over-the-air updates, and the MBUX Superscreen integrates technology without overwhelming the cabin.
