Mercedes A 220 Sedan vs. 2022 Audi A3: Everything You've Wanted in a Compact Luxury Sedan

It's never been a better time to own a Mercedes-Benz A 220. With the latest styling, turbocharged power, advanced safety, and interactive technologies, you can have the latest equipment in a compact package.

To illustrate, we compare the A 220 4MATIC to the 2022 Audi A3.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class features a profile that is timeless

At first glance, the A 220 sedan features clean, unique Mercedes styling that appears fresh no matter how long you own the vehicle. The smooth contours and well-profiled LED lighting also contribute to a drag coefficient of just 0.26. When the Audi A3 stands next to the A 220, styling differences emerge and the A 220 has a strong advantage.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz A 220 matches up with power and value

Aside from styling that lasts, the A 220 features a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that generates 188 horsepower, slightly more than the A3's 40 TFSI powertrain that is offered in that lineup's base and mid-level trims. Although the A3 also offers the 45 TFSI that increases horsepower to 228 and torque to 258 lb-ft, this caps the maximum capability for the A3.

Considering the A3 offers a bit more power with its second powertrain, it makes more sense to stick with Mercedes-Benz if you prefer an upgrade from the A 220's standard engine. The Audi A3 Technik with the 45 TFSI has a starting MSRP of $47,200, close to the starting MSRP of the performance-enhanced Mercedes-Benz AMG A 35. An A 220 on steroids, it delivers 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which is much more than what the Audi S3 offers in terms of power and torque.

Each A220 also includes the acclaimed Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) interactive voice and touch system. Driver and passengers can use a variety of voice commands to adjust vehicle settings, find the nearest coffeehouse, activate features, and more. With a simple, "Hey Mercedes, I'm cold," MBUX automatically heats the cabin to a warmer temperature. And since the passengers can also interact with the system through voice commands and touchpads, it keeps the driver focused on the road.
