Mercedes-Benz GLC: Three engines, three personalities

Several elements contribute to making a vehicle's strength in the category in which it operates. This is the case for the design, the level of equipment, the quality of the multimedia system, the comfort offered, etc. However, one of the most attractive elements is being able to take advantage of different powertrains. For a manufacturer, such a choice allows for a wider range of selections and seduces a greater number of buyers.

With the Mercedes-Benz GLC, that's exactly what you get, because in the lineup are three different powertrain configurations, three approaches with distinct personalities. Let's see how they differ.

1 - GLC 300

If you prefer comfort above all else, the GLC 300 is the one you'll find what you're looking for. It's powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with 255 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. We agree that's enough to ensure great performance, but it's mostly because this engine works very smoothly and knows how to let itself be forgotten. It's also the most fuel-efficient, with 11 L/100 km in the city and 8.7 L/100 km on the highway. A nine-speed automatic transmission is associated with it. The time for the 0-100 km/h? 6.2 seconds.

2 - GLC AMG 63 S

If you want an SUV that's completely unbridled and capable of leaving most cars behind, then the AMG 63 S is the one you should turn to. It responds to the work of a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that offers 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Here, no compromises are made while performance is all-important. The GLC takes just 3.8 seconds to go from 0-100 km/h. And all of the model's senses are more alert with this engine, whether it's the steering, suspension or braking. Constant fun guaranteed.

3 - GLC AMG 43

Finally, if you want something in between, the balance is found with the AMG 43 version. It splits the difference with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine that pushes 385 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. That's enough to get you up to speed (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) without feeling like you're constantly behind the wheel of a racing SUV. Balance is also felt in everyday driving, as the chassis is less in attack mode like the AMG 63 S, but not in "rest" mode like the one in the GLC 300.
