Over 50% New Components, a Generative AI Concierge and Micro-LED Headlamps: What the 2027 S-Class Brings to Calgary
March 27 2026,
Mercedes-Benz has been building flagship sedans for 140 years. The 2027 S-Class marks the most comprehensive mid-generation update in the model's history - over 50 percent of its components are new or refined. This technological leap brings artificial intelligence, micro-LED lighting, and a supercomputer architecture to a sedan that already defined the luxury category.
The refresh arrives with a new MB.OS supercomputer controlling every vehicle system. The MBUX Virtual Assistant now uses generative AI from Microsoft and Google to handle multi-turn conversations and remember context. The headlamps use micro-LED technology for sharper, brighter illumination. The grille is 20 percent larger and illuminated. For the first time, the standing Mercedes star on the hood can be illuminated.
The MB.OS Supercomputer and Generative AI
The 2027 S-Class runs on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), a purpose-built supercomputer integrating all vehicle domains into one intelligent ecosystem. It connects to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud for over-the-air updates, delivering new features and improvements after delivery.
The fourth-generation MBUX infotainment introduces the MBUX Virtual Assistant with generative AI, combining AI agents from Microsoft Bing Search, Google Cloud's Automotive AI Agent, and ChatGPT-4o. The result is a digital companion handling complex, multi-turn conversations - like asking for restaurant recommendations, then directions, then parking, all in one flow. The assistant appears as a living avatar on the Zero Layer interface with dynamic colours and animations.
Navigation is now provided by Google Maps, and MBUX Surround Navigation uses Unity game engine graphics to render real-time 3D representations of the car and its surroundings.
Micro-LED DIGITAL LIGHT Headlamps
The 2027 S-Class features next-generation DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps with micro-LED technology - smaller, brighter, and more precise than standard LEDs. The twin-star headlamps create a larger, brighter illumination field with an adaptive partial high beam function that adjusts based on oncoming traffic and road conditions.
The illuminated grille is approximately 20 percent larger with redesigned, three-dimensional chrome stars. The standing Mercedes star on the hood is optionally illuminated, becoming part of the S-Class light signature.
Powertrain Options: Six-Cylinder and V8
The 2027 S-Class offers two electrified powertrains, both featuring a 23-hp integrated starter generator (ISG) and 48-volt electrical system.
S 500 4MATIC: The inline-six engine (M 256 Evo) produces 442 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, with up to 472 lb-ft available using overtorque. The fully beltless engine features a twin-scroll turbo and electric auxiliary compressor for swift response. The ISG allows fuel-free coasting and recaptures energy during deceleration.
S 580 4MATIC: The V8 engine (M 177 Evo) delivers 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, available across a broad rpm range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm.
Both engines pair with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. The AIRMATIC air suspension is standard, with electronically controlled air springs that adjust to changing driving conditions and lower the ride height at higher speeds for improved aerodynamics.
Rear-axle steering is standard at 4.5 degrees or optional at 10 degrees, reducing the turning circle and enhancing high-speed stability.
